Then we painted them, mixing different shades of brown. While they dried, we cut out 4 circles from different coloured paper. We folded each circle in half and glued one half of a circle to another, continuing until you had used 4 circles. This creates one bauble so repeat until you have 3 or 4 to hang from the antlers. You can also add a little glitter to Rudolph's nose. To finish, we backed them on red paper.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw4uKJGG9ed6DCPc3mOVhG3mDM303G6YHIjZnRSd_yDJ44CUQJBayrXgIx9BPI5XO_sCErX8xVNb7pmJxnO5kwVoUT4oJhXQCII9KV5zA_SquVJQ2gaVhihDbikF29GYvuddPvhrVRAx29/s2048/20201211_133817.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw4uKJGG9ed6DCPc3mOVhG3mDM303G6YHIjZnRSd_yDJ44CUQJBayrXgIx9BPI5XO_sCErX8xVNb7pmJxnO5kwVoUT4oJhXQCII9KV5zA_SquVJQ2gaVhihDbikF29GYvuddPvhrVRAx29/s320/20201211_133817.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjT2BHeKQJb2RqId2SuLNvrM_UNDgo5ovNnQZKNZxXut6QkCtqRvm6jWb1rSJASF2j4egARV3aJCfmCPka-z1d40vGuwZaZ3JPhoWl3HPjO-NBhXV-ofOHO-YyVdG10WUx7AQwxj-Gotl-/s2048/20201222_100927.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjT2BHeKQJb2RqId2SuLNvrM_UNDgo5ovNnQZKNZxXut6QkCtqRvm6jWb1rSJASF2j4egARV3aJCfmCPka-z1d40vGuwZaZ3JPhoWl3HPjO-NBhXV-ofOHO-YyVdG10WUx7AQwxj-Gotl-/s320/20201222_100927.jpg" width="226" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGX6JQkaPxM9SqoL3OS29mlvM1lsPeeSXdcCjjnoaoICHD1J4Zp9t42lpQfGTIMhoscAeZHZ_9yH-2dSl73cje8fUYoe3IElQHQMBgpfhFhMLqDMFDtvfoA2jbbyqnDszty7vcznbJSdQx/s2048/Copy+of+20201222_100923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1469" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGX6JQkaPxM9SqoL3OS29mlvM1lsPeeSXdcCjjnoaoICHD1J4Zp9t42lpQfGTIMhoscAeZHZ_9yH-2dSl73cje8fUYoe3IElQHQMBgpfhFhMLqDMFDtvfoA2jbbyqnDszty7vcznbJSdQx/s320/Copy+of+20201222_100923.jpg" width="230" /></a></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">Clay Christmas Tree Decoration</span></h3><p>Cookie cutters are really useful for this Art activity. Each student chose a shape they would like to make. They rolled out their clay and used the cookie cutters to create the shape. Some made little decorations for their Christmas Tree to give it more of a 3D effect. Using a straw, we put a hole in each decoration, so we could add a ribbon to hang it from the tree. Each day at 10 o'clock we went out for a quick movement break. We had a simple routine each day and also added in a few playground games. As the weeks went by, it was clear that it benefited all the students and helped them to focus when we returned to the classroom. </p><p>Usually, I do Gaeilge straight after the movement break. So we started to incorporate some of our Gaeilge lesson into the movement break. The students loved it as it was more time outside in the fresh air and they didn't even realise the amount of learning taking place!</p><p>Here are a few ideas of games and activities you could use during movement breaks.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Cén t-am é a mhac tíre?</h3><p>The Irish equivalent of What time is it Mr Wolf? This became a daily one as the students really liked it and they could certainly count to 12 by the end of the year! </p><p>A great one to teach time in a fun practical way.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFFbli6XBQrzLGZL0AwTNxt1T5E_fLzZPHMdTPdV-zG2e1_Alg1DT72YbRS9xn8hyjsvsEsJf370IeErn47NaGX30IGhatmkPDRc4kQmpNGu3ooE0OkDbWuW14xcpyMU7M6CU5pdmEbMm3/s1080/1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFFbli6XBQrzLGZL0AwTNxt1T5E_fLzZPHMdTPdV-zG2e1_Alg1DT72YbRS9xn8hyjsvsEsJf370IeErn47NaGX30IGhatmkPDRc4kQmpNGu3ooE0OkDbWuW14xcpyMU7M6CU5pdmEbMm3/s320/1.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;"><b>Rith</b></h3><p></p><p>I didn't have a name for this one. All students line up in centre of pitch. I called out a question linked to the vocabulary and phrases we were learning for the week. For example 'An maith leat a bheith ag.....'</p><p>Children then run to one side of pitch if they like it and to the other side if they don't. To get back to the centre of the pitch for the next question, they have to answer the question correctly; 'Is maith liom a bheith ag..../ní maith liom a bheith ag...' It offers an opportunity to repeat phrases a lot and also hear their peers forming the sentence.</p><p>If the vocabulary was new, I would bring out the flashcards as a visual prompt to those who needed it.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Cars </h3><div style="text-align: left;">I shared this idea on Instagram at the start of the year. for Rahoo.ie. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Her career highlights include being filmed by
BBC London teaching in the classroom and guest-lecturing at the Institute of
Education in London. She has worked as a teacher, school leader, teacher
trainer and initial teacher training tutor prior to setting up Rahoo.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">One of her favourite memories of teaching is
when her class (with the help of kind colleagues!) organised a surprise
engagement party for her and sung Bruno Mars “Just the Ways You Are” to her!<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">One of her most embarrassing moments is
getting locked into the school building when working late in her NQT year, set
off the alarm and had to squeeze under the big school gate and two women
passing by had to drag her out! All caught on CCTV!<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Ciara is </span><span lang="EN-IE"><a href="https://rahoo.ie/about-us/"><span style="color: windowtext; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">passionate about teacher and

<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">This is the ultimate tip in terms of
stress-free lesson planning and halving your planning time! It creates total
ease and flow for teachers and takes the hassle and the indecisiveness out of
lesson planning and where to put activities.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

lesson planning and in lessons themselves, it is best to have a system. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IE;">Of course, in teaching it is necessary to be
flexible – as literally anything can happen to thwart your plans! Nevertheless,
a system is solid and will help achieve consistency in the quality of lesson
planning and lessons themselves. It doesn’t mean that all your lessons have to
be the same, but by creating some sort of consistent approach, it will make the
planning process flow easier. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

lesson planning process is explored in detail in Rahoo’s EPV Summer Course

ask yourself these questions:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">What is the purpose of marking?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Who is it for?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">The purpose of marking is for students to
learn and improve from constructive feedback. The purpose of marking is also
for the teacher to learn about how individual students are doing and if they need
to tweak their teaching.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Marking is fundamentally for the students and
their progress.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY3_I3NEJaw2Z1tiSRRQfmID5s243jZl0puWnM6bZDnzuC_htrxzvu8LKqjiJ0drxt6pE_63fYIEnY_zygLdS4WW7bp7cTpM9r33EjK8HJafej6UNPLhxg_AFNamkcS8VC7lAP9RzA1e5W/s1080/thumbnail.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="608" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY3_I3NEJaw2Z1tiSRRQfmID5s243jZl0puWnM6bZDnzuC_htrxzvu8LKqjiJ0drxt6pE_63fYIEnY_zygLdS4WW7bp7cTpM9r33EjK8HJafej6UNPLhxg_AFNamkcS8VC7lAP9RzA1e5W/s320/thumbnail.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><br /></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Please don’t fall into the trap of marking for
the parents or principals. Many teacher tick and flick in books so that the
parents or principals can see that they have looked at the page. Ticking and
Flicking is NOT good quality feedback – it is not purposeful and it is a waste
of your time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-IE" style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">It is better to choose a piece of work to mark
– and mark that to a good standard using a feedback framework like two stars
and a wish to provide constructive feedback to students.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Our English reading texts were also based on this genre, as it provided examples of Report Writing for the children.</p><p>As we read the texts, we identified the information that was provided about the various animals: their appearance, habitat, what it eats, predators and some interesting facts.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQMXVN1o1v3JtaQbIa7ZAoIh26fDIO9P54l857vXMOjwBdhk2DVHyTmPYuz544H9ujP9cSXu7bTcmfOqDl1tiN6FZ_K8DFar4qrsCWPdDf_nOhhKfdAW1WYrZ7QjfpZqCFgWVHR1CIheQp/s705/126521155_2500283126938967_3612412069638356666_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="565" data-original-width="705" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQMXVN1o1v3JtaQbIa7ZAoIh26fDIO9P54l857vXMOjwBdhk2DVHyTmPYuz544H9ujP9cSXu7bTcmfOqDl1tiN6FZ_K8DFar4qrsCWPdDf_nOhhKfdAW1WYrZ7QjfpZqCFgWVHR1CIheQp/s320/126521155_2500283126938967_3612412069638356666_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /></div>We decided to explore toucans in more detail. Here are some of the activities we hope to do during the week.</p><h4 style="text-align: left;">Maths on the Move</h4><div>I have already written a <a href="https://msfordesclassroom.blogspot.com/2019/10/maths-on-move.html">blog post</a> on this where you can find a more detailed description. We do this outdoors and incorporate it into PE. For each class I have copied a set of questions and answers onto card. These are very versatile as they can also be used for matching games in the classroom. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOoLjc_4y22eeg2Z5WtxbHYu4WXYND1SL8sKXLEo8SO6q_I2n5YxgN7f2GQ1LwLh6u3uOuI_GsTu4Zk6QvH0YsFehpiDoR5whLgNA9uDLKJZfFkD-9dfvRdWBtK6X953g3NSR776OsZeO/s516/1st+o.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="511" data-original-width="516" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOoLjc_4y22eeg2Z5WtxbHYu4WXYND1SL8sKXLEo8SO6q_I2n5YxgN7f2GQ1LwLh6u3uOuI_GsTu4Zk6QvH0YsFehpiDoR5whLgNA9uDLKJZfFkD-9dfvRdWBtK6X953g3NSR776OsZeO/s320/1st+o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div>1st Class will focus on addition to 15, 2nd will use mental addition strategies and subtraction facts, while 3rd Class will focus on mental addition strategies and times tables. For a single stream class, simply photocopy the same questions on different coloured paper for each team. When collecting the answers they can only take it is it is their team colour!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5uWvQXe9j2iF6G2Au4h_4INSNN20oYIWqCeZWtql_-7_zUdhsVkc5KzODgiEqqF3liv2puhxfW4k9QRALSw3n3jO9JJRvDzGROAbQ_BeGhfcsEGh50hSU6I8arz3y6zaAOxV6h5BqOPOO/s633/2nd+o.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="633" data-original-width="514" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5uWvQXe9j2iF6G2Au4h_4INSNN20oYIWqCeZWtql_-7_zUdhsVkc5KzODgiEqqF3liv2puhxfW4k9QRALSw3n3jO9JJRvDzGROAbQ_BeGhfcsEGh50hSU6I8arz3y6zaAOxV6h5BqOPOO/s320/2nd+o.jpg" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There are lots of variations to this game too. There are so many amazing stories of Irish people, giving a little snippet of their lives, along with beautiful photographs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNPMApfBJJsRXXYyqa89pqToyES6ulNUGmcuvK3kL2rpK2EcPISxi53i6Ti_5ELQNpTt0z1FTJ2p5ndiUcqo6bEtDPCbmayvpCsjN3JzMyHusNmT_i2DEOrezW_QRWVWW1wtEGRSf9yLqo/s1600/20200604_223129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNPMApfBJJsRXXYyqa89pqToyES6ulNUGmcuvK3kL2rpK2EcPISxi53i6Ti_5ELQNpTt0z1FTJ2p5ndiUcqo6bEtDPCbmayvpCsjN3JzMyHusNmT_i2DEOrezW_QRWVWW1wtEGRSf9yLqo/s320/20200604_223129.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
When looking through it last year, I had an idea to use it during a team teaching lesson with a wonderful colleague of mine.<br />
<br />
Our focus was to develop their ability to describe characters (for Narrative Writing), using photographs. We were also giving them the opportunity to practise their comprehension strategies (which had been taught explicitly throughout the year).<br />
<br />
To begin, my colleague read 'Old Danny Murphy' to the children, which had them mesmerised as she read it with such expression.<br />
<br />
Then, we showed them one photo from the book on the visualiser and we modelled a character description together for the children.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Huge scope for Oral Language development here too!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What can you infer from the photo?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Following this, they split into groups to do a collaborative character description. Each group had a different photo.<br />
<br />
To finish, each group described their character to the class, while showing their photo. The observations and comments from the various groups were AMAZING....we were both blown away by the connections and inferences they made by looking at the smallest details of the photographs. Leaving the textbook on the shelf and using a book I had found at home led to one of the most memorable lessons for me!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrEZgNMjacS8pIauf3cvdGVXecucaLbk466Iqcg_lXWbjce8e0Xg20VAlba43jtpVv43O8Gjlc1pFjvkfp5DZaZlba30Uj26Xl-MLcUIHu_KH7CimG5VQ90NuBBcOuVN4c62guyIKhl1Gz/s1600/20200604_224518.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrEZgNMjacS8pIauf3cvdGVXecucaLbk466Iqcg_lXWbjce8e0Xg20VAlba43jtpVv43O8Gjlc1pFjvkfp5DZaZlba30Uj26Xl-MLcUIHu_KH7CimG5VQ90NuBBcOuVN4c62guyIKhl1Gz/s320/20200604_224518.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
They enjoyed it so much that they wanted to write their character descriptions on their own writing frames the following day!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjuGGNTjtjEIWJkVruVItnkUCh2UvfjKKdu5-zdhCCL3TG2dhPm0KKdLORdZflqs1A6fgeKNxSP92D7PcilxSAJJtjA8PLBZGkKWiEhc-AaZBEFyt5xFU4Vb7aSb7tbkJGilIs4kgnzYGY/s1600/20200604_224529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjuGGNTjtjEIWJkVruVItnkUCh2UvfjKKdu5-zdhCCL3TG2dhPm0KKdLORdZflqs1A6fgeKNxSP92D7PcilxSAJJtjA8PLBZGkKWiEhc-AaZBEFyt5xFU4Vb7aSb7tbkJGilIs4kgnzYGY/s320/20200604_224529.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So if anyone has this book lying on a shelf at home, bring it in to your class someday as a stimulus for an Art lesson, to develop comprehension strategies, discuss how life in Ireland has changed or simply to read a page about one of these incredible individuals! The possibilities are endless!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhmUTNfmlRgCT05VqQg6usWMt80fCrr2tCNbN_ZqxerO8dncNQU4NAhGu02xNtPHwwxr1kwbO2JLoP-SL7fTzmubuuoBRNjUrgCHIn6eWaIslpySQpKqBq6ThRJpivVkblrkuzWbAmaz1-/s1600/20200604_223201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhmUTNfmlRgCT05VqQg6usWMt80fCrr2tCNbN_ZqxerO8dncNQU4NAhGu02xNtPHwwxr1kwbO2JLoP-SL7fTzmubuuoBRNjUrgCHIn6eWaIslpySQpKqBq6ThRJpivVkblrkuzWbAmaz1-/s320/20200604_223201.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Or have a look to see if you have other books lying around that have the potential to provide an interesting stimulus to a lesson.<br />
<br />
Feel free to share your ideas below!Ms Forde's Classroomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17933498246107671233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4404994488318296710.post-41235128478056696532020-05-13T18:15:00.000+01:002020-06-05T13:46:21.778+01:00Virtual School Tour Ideas (& Free Templates)This is a blog post I didn't think I would ever be writing!<br />
<br />
I am putting together some ideas of virtual tours that you may like to have a look at for your class.<br />
<br />
If you find other good ideas, please send them on and I will add them in.<br />
A positive to take from school closures is that we can literally go anywhere in the world for our school tour this year!<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2>
Titanic Belfast/ Cobh</h2>
<br />
They have put together an excellent tour with audio. You can pick and choose which sections you would like to focus on with your class. This is probably more suitable for the senior classes and is very easy to navigate. Click <a href="https://tour.aiwebservices.com/c/titanic/language">here</a> to check it out yourself.<br />
<br />
I really like that there are lots of fun activities and resources so you use it as a whole unit of learning before and after the virtual school tour. There is huge scope for extending the learning with this tour. There are even some fun recipes to try out.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://titanicbelfast.com/learningresources.aspx"><img alt="Tin Foil Boats - Titanic Belfast Activity" src="https://titanicbelfast.com/getmedia/1207d117-0c05-417e-93fb-4462cfaa0c1e/Tin-Foil-Boats.aspx?width=200&height=281" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://titanicbelfast.com/stayhome.aspx">Image Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You can also learn more about the Titanic through a virtual tour of the <a href="https://www.virtualvisittours.com/titanic-experience-cobh/">Titanic Experience Cobh.</a> It isn't as easy to navigate but it does have some excellent visuals of what life was like aboard the Titanic.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Dublin Zoo</h2>
<div>
Dublin Zoo are having virtual tours every Monday at 10am.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They also have a section on their website of <a href="https://www.dublinzoo.ie/virtual-tours-2/">pre-loaded videos</a> that you could use with your class as a tour.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dublinzoo.ie/virtual-tours-2/"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fA3slWqVmUQ/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fA3slWqVmUQ?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Dublin Zoo Website also has many activities and live web cam links (can be slow to load) that could be used as part of a tour.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can check them out in more detail <a href="https://www.dublinzoo.ie/news/dublinzoofun/">here</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<h2>
<a href="https://www.dublinia.ie/online-learning/primary/">Viking & Medieval Dublin Tour</a></h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This <a href="https://www.dublinia.ie/online-learning/primary/">website</a> has some great videos that children can watch to get a sense of what life was like long ago. It has a cool feature to see how Dublin changed over the years, by scrolling along the time line.</div>
<div>
You can also compare it to present day, creating a nice visual for the children.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are quizzes included to keep the children engaged in the various topics.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They even have a teacher tab, to show you how it links directly to the curriculum so it is easily one that could be used when we get back to classrooms!</div>
<div>

<h2>
Ellis Island</h2>
<div>
This site has <a href="http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/">interactive maps of Ellis Island</a>, stories from the children who emigrated to America and a virtual field trip of the island.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is probably suitable to upper primary levels.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian)</h2>
<div>
Unfortunately, there are limited virtual exhibitions on the Irish National Museum of Natural History website so I have linked this one instead, the Smithsonian.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are different tours, but I chose the <a href="https://naturalhistory.si.edu/visit/virtual-tour">permanent exhibitions</a> one.</div>
<div>
You can take a virtual tour of the different floors of the museum. You could set up a trail for your own class to find things along the way to engage them.</div>
<div>
While there are some useful resources under the 'Education' tab, it does take a bit of searching through!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
UNESCO World Heritage Sites</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a really good virtual tour around the <a href="https://earth.google.com/web/data=CiQSIhIgMTA1NDZmMzhmZGM3MTFlNmEyN2MxYjMxZWFiNDNjN2Q">World of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.</a> You can spin the globe to find 30 places of interest, read about them and explore them visually. </div>

<h2>
Aquarium Tours</h2>
<div>
I have found 2 different websites that might be good for a virtual tour.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first is <a href="https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals/live-cams">Monterey Bay Aquarium</a>, which has live web cams for the children to explore. It also has Ocean Explorer booklets and games.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other website is <a href="https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/webcam/beluga-whale-webcam/">Georgia Aquarium</a>. It is similar in that it has live web cams of different sea creatures. It has a section for <a href="https://www.georgiaaquarium.org/at-home-learning-with-georgia-aquarium/">home learning</a> where children can learn about other topics each Friday, complete activity sheets and enter Art competitions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
Áras an Uachtaráin</h2>
<div>
There is a lovely <a href="https://president.ie/en/childrens-section">'Children's Section'</a> on the official Áras an Uachtaráin website. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://president.ie/en/explore-visit/interactive-tour#" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="765" data-original-width="1600" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm-EeQx4C0IZyzx8HcUbME-e4HOlq3qNVR6Y3cNJF_mOMfWJ9iMFetAMeyoq7OqXxGk-VjYslG6wIs18wP6X9DhYA-LHavI6q72ro0NRbFdeHRc7gYqvIcKcLez8Y4V7RAKKug7cXGdIjY/s400/president+2.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://president.ie/en/explore-visit/interactive-tour">Image Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here children can take a virtual tour of some rooms in the Áras. They can also click on each of the guides shown below to learn more about the President, where he lives and the Phoenix Park.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://president.ie/en/childrens-section">Image Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is a quiz for students to take to to see what they can remember from the virtual tour.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
The National Art Gallery</h2>
<div>
Some classes in my school did this a couple of weeks ago. They looked through some rooms in the National Gallery and chose their favourite painting, which they wrote a little about.</div>

The National History Museum</h2>
You can go step by step through the floors of the museum to explore a huge variety of animals. I remember doing this tour myself when I was in 3rd Class (along with Dublin Zoo) after getting the train to Dublin!<br />
<br />

* Update<br />
I did this webinar on the 28th May as they added extra dates and there were some great ideas on it. A lot are already mentioned above and I will share some new ideas here:<br />
<br />
<h3>
Create Your own Tour</h3>
<br />
You can choose where you want to go yourself and design your own tour for your students on <a href="https://arvr.google.com/tourcreator/">Google Tour Creator.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
The course facilitator has also put together lots of tours, which you can find <a href="https://sites.google.com/durrowns.com/virtualschooltour/home?authuser=1">here</a>, if you want to check it out.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
**UPDATE<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.instagram.com/educationthroughcreation/?hl=en">Education Through Creation</a> put together a step by step guide to doing your virtual tour as a guest post, which you can find <a href="https://irishprimaryteacher.ie/the-virtual-school-tour-structured-from-start-to-finish-guest-blogpost/">here!</a></div>

It is a set of clues that you could use for an Easter hunt which might add some fun to your day at home with your children. You could also get them to come up with their own Easter Hunt clues.<br />
<br />
<h4>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It seems surreal even typing this blog post, as we find ourselves in unprecedented times. I am going to add resources to this post that may help parents and minders over the coming weeks to help our students.<br />
<br />
First up is the daily journal that may help children to have a focus each day, trying to keep active and engaged in their learning. It also comes with an ideas sheet, although I am sure children will be much more creative than the ones I have included! Simply click on the image to be redirected to the free download.<br />

The latest resource I put together is to help children to pick out the positives each day. This is a challenging time for students, parents and teachers and I'm sure there will be times at home when children find it difficult. Hopefully this resource will help them to identify and record lots of positives throughout their week. There are two versions, one for simply a picture and one where there is also the option to write a sentence or two about the picture.</div>

They are particularly useful if you work in a<b> multi-grade setting</b> or have a <b>wide range of abilities</b> in your class, as there are 5 of each worksheet included.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Me-Fein-Bileoga-Oibre-20-Activity-sheets-5228361"><img border="0" data-original-height="729" data-original-width="709" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg98pLodoHOErXtljb6GxRTcOgpXU5J5OO_0-R4To7qeBsLoSNTXzmasfd0LYCM4zRb4ZfS0KH5-bEjVGGUsk4sDHWc5URIBMzY6qmdco9TAPJ3iD9uOXw-1XU9Zc91nOcwmPVymLQKdsoQ/s320/84506514_492481424788931_2473957194639343616_n.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I really like using these to <b>reinforce vocabulary</b> for the theme of 'Mé Féin' and I have doubled it up to use them for their <b>spellings</b> also. I usually make a 'Litriú Workbook' and the children add these pages to it each week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Me-Fein-Bileoga-Oibre-20-Activity-sheets-5228361"><img border="0" data-original-height="862" data-original-width="879" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw9NgsqB0Qwg2A3Xfwi5Ml79reNTLX56IClA_9PuXETkSY2DnxuO_c8jTkpkWo4kh55EFFKR9CpP3eX-aY9A5kWmPiRy6gHuDrVhdU49rfO96wfHOUcl_Q5nxr-PeCUJzSyNvhUcRI9K3w/s320/84845338_913093165792654_5567623868819963904_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Rather than just learn to spell individual words, I feel it is important that the children can use the word in context so the sheets allow the children to <b>use the vocabulary in sentences</b>. It also connects all three strands of <b>reading, writing and oral language.</b><br />
<br />
I have used these in station teaching groups and again the children can use a sheet that suits their ability. I have also used them as a <b>form of assessment</b> of learning.<br />
<br />
Included in the bundle are:<br />
<br />
-4 subthemes of 'Mé Féin' (aois, Mo Chorp, Mothúcháin and Mé Féin (gruaig/súile)<br />
-5 differentiated worksheets in each (20 sheets in total)<br />

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
Earlier this school year, I had a post on some ways I approach spellings with my students. Here is an overview of how I have worked on improving spellings with the children.</div>
<br />
<br />
I started by asking the children to do a <b>free writing sample</b> (can be based on any topic) to ascertain their spelling strengths and weaknesses. I also assessed their knowledge of how to spell the <b>72 tricky words</b> from the Jolly Phonics programme.<br />
<br />
Following this, I made a list of their spelling strengths so that we wouldn't waste valuable time on spellings they already knew. Instead we focused on any <b>tricky words</b> they didn't know. Following this, we began <b>Brendan Culligan's Corewords List,</b> using dictation sentences. <br />
<br />

<br />
Each week the<b> <u>children also choose 1 or 2 words they want to learn</u></b> to spell themselves, giving them ownership of their learning. Over a 5 week period, one child learned how to spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious by segmenting it into manageable chunks!<br />
<br />
Strategies we use throughout the week include:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
These posters are used as prompts for the children and they are also encouraged to come up with their own strategies to remember words. This is an example of what one student did to remember her cousin's name, without any prompt from me! (Isla: I see lego apples!)<br />

How I structure it:</h4>
1. Choose a Maths topic (e.g. addition facts, long multiplication)<br />

<br />
3. Arrange your class into teams/pairs.<br />
4. Hide the answer cards around the area you will be playing in (if outdoors I put them under cones so they don't blow away).<br />
5. Give each team/pair their first question card. Together, they work out the answer and then run to find the matching answer card, which they return to you.<br />
6. Give them the next question card and see how many they can complete in a set amount of time or the team to complete a certain amount of them first wins.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h4>
Variations/Tips</h4>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Print the questions on different coloured pages (one colour per team) so that you can use the same questions with all teams. Each team must find the answer card to the question card that matches their team colour (e.g. if the answer to my question is 10 and my team colour is orange, I can't take a 10 printed on a blue page back to my team, I must find the orange one!) The first team to have completed all their question and found the matching cards wins.</li>
<li>Teams complete the question behind their cone and only one child from the group runs to find the answer each time.</li>
<li>Give one question to each team at a time rather than giving them all the questions together, which encourages them to work together to figure them out.</li>
<li>Give a sandwich bag to each group to gather their question and answer cards.</li>
<li>It facilitates differentiate, for example, one group could be doing long multiplication but another group may be doing short multiplication.</li>
</ul>
<h4>
<br />What can I use the game for?</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It can literally be used for all Maths topics but ones that I have used it for include:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>matching fractions and decimals</li>
<li>long multiplication (figure it out and find the answer)</li>
<li>matching analogue and digital time</li>
</ul>

<div dir="ltr">
This post focuses on the impact of explicitly teaching fuaimeanna in Gaeilge.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
From my own experience, it is an area of Gaeilge that I take for granted especially in the senior end of the school, often presuming that the children understand . However, a couple of years ago when teaching 4th and 5th, I quickly realised that I needed to be more explicit in my teaching of fuaimeanna, just as I would in English.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The benefits were evident in the children's reading fluency and pronunciation. It also really aided their spellings both in written tasks and the weekly scrúdú.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
In my class, I used display posters, which I referred to almost daily. I also used these cartaí during Gaeilge stations: matching the fuaim to the correct flashcard.</div>
